KARATE KIDS PROGRAM
7 through 10 year olds

What is the Karate Kids program?

Our Karate Kids class is a program designed for children 7 to 10 years old. At this period in their lives, children are faced with conflict, moral dilemmas, school, and a whole slew of issues they have never had to face before. They are beginning to develop their independence at this age and friends are becoming more important and influential. Kids in this age group need to learn how to deal with conflict. Children enrolled in the Karate Kids program not only learn to protect themselves, but also learn the value of finding non-violent ways to resolve conflict. We teach children vital fundamental skills that will help them throughout their lives -- not just in a fight.

What are some of the benefits to the Karate Kids program?

Our Karate Kids program teaches kids how to defend themselves and escape all manner of holds, punches and kicks. In today's society, children, unfortunately, are all too often the target of violence. Whether the threat is from an adult, an older kid, or a peer, our program teaches your child to escape. Once the children learn the self-confidence that comes from knowing how to protect themselves, they learn the value of finding non-violent ways to resolve conflict.

In addition to the physical aspects of the class, the program teaches fundamental skills that will help children throughout their lives. By using Job Lists, Teacher Progress Checks, and books that parents are to read with their children, we include parents and teachers so lessons are reinforced in all areas of the child's life. We focus on basic, but ever so important, areas such as goal achievement, respect for others, manners, responsibility and focus. Our program teaches Karate Kids the Black Belt Success Cycle as a tool to help them set and achieve their goals.

We teach kids the 4 Mental Aspects of Learning and Training. First how to rate their own effort, second how to develop healthy competition, third how to fully focus on doing the task at hand, and fourth to monitor how they are learning and improving.

The Defeat the Bully WITHOUT Fighting Program teaches Karate Kids how to deal with teasing and bullying without becoming a victim or getting into fights. We teach the kids the mental skills they need to deal with aggression and end conflict peacefully.

Kids practice light-to-no-contact freestyle sparring in class to develop timing and deal with the stress of an attack. This teaches them to develop self-control and accuracy. They can safely practice their punches, blocks and kicks in an atmosphere of healthy competition and learn proper sportsmanship.

Our Karate Kids program is especially valuable to those children that do not thrive in the unforgiving world of team sports. In our program, each child is given the time to learn at their own pace and value his/her own achievements. We recognize that each child learns at his own rate and we allow him/her to develop as such. Children are taught to view mistakes as input to help them succeed and we allow them to make mistakes without judgment, learn from the mistakes, and continue to work until they succeed at a task. We teach the kids to persevere and overcome obstacles.

At Scornavacco Family Karate, we create an atmosphere of cooperation in which the kids can help each other out and are rewarded for doing so. We teach them Leadership Abilities and how to work in group settings. As kids practice self-defense techniques on each other, they learn how to respect each other's bodies and feelings.
